Partnership project enhances outdoor space for young people in Dundee
Young people living at McDonald Street in Dundee are benefitting from a newly created outdoor space, following the completion of decking works by Hillcrest Enterprises’ Maintenance team.
The project, completed this summer, transformed a previously unused area at the top of the car park into a safe, accessible and welcoming environment for residents. Hillcrest joiners worked closely with Action for Children (AFC) staff to design and deliver a raised decking area that meets the needs of the service and the young people who live there.
McDonald Street forms part of the wider Dundee Youth Housing Service, a partnership between Hillcrest as landlord and Action for Children as service provider. The 24/7 staffed service supports up to 18 homeless young people at a time, providing a safe place to live alongside structured support to help them transition into independent living or return to their family homes.
The new decking area will play an important role in supporting both wellbeing and learning. Residents are currently working with Dundee College to undertake Level 2 Horticultural Studies, and the outdoor space provides a secure and practical setting for activities linked to this programme, helping them build confidence and practical life skills.
Hillcrest Contracts Manager Bruce Leslie said: “This was a relatively small project, but one that will make a real difference to the young people living at McDonald Street. By working closely with Action for Children, we were able to create a safe, usable outdoor space that supports both wellbeing and learning opportunities. It’s a great example of how our teams can deliver meaningful improvements for the communities we serve.”
Claire Miller, Manager for Action for Children added: “It’s important that young people can make their spaces their own, and the new decking gives them an outdoor area to do just that. As the space develops, they’ll have opportunities to gain qualifications through our SQA Awards, while taking part in activities like building planters, growing vegetables and creating a mural. This project will help young people feel invested in a space that will benefit them for years to come.”
