Youth Work Week 2024: Angus Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Service

Posted: November 5, 2024

This week is Youth Work Week 2024, an annual celebration of all things youth work. Each year has a different theme, and this year’s is A right to youth work for all – delivering positive futures for young people.

To mark the campaign, we’re shining a spotlight on our fantastic team of workers at the Angus Young People’s service. The service has four main support areas that work out of the Forfar office. These are Early Intervention and Family Support, Drug and Alcohol Support, Peer Mental Health Support, and Relationship, Sexual Health and Parenthood.

Today we are focussing on our Drug and Alcohol Support service to find out more about it and the impact it has.

Drug and Alcohol Support

This service supports young people aged between 12 to 25 years that are involved in regular drug and/or alcohol use, involvement in offending, anti-social or risk-taking behaviour.

The team works on building positive relationships with the people they support through a community-based therapeutic intervention and offers a tailored 6-to-12-week programme using the SHANARRI assessment and review tool. They use this to measure the outcomes of service delivery and this tool empowers the young person to make positive changes to reach improved outcomes.

They also provide group education on specific topics to support young people to recognise the risks and dangers of drug and alcohol use, as well as harm reduction techniques. These sessions are very interactive and engaging for young people.
