Youth Work Week 2024: Spotlight on our Angus Young People’s Service

Posted: November 4, 2024

This week is Youth Work Week 2024, an annual celebration of all things youth work. Each year has a different theme, and this year’s is A right to youth work for all – delivering positive futures for young people.

To mark the campaign, we’re shining a spotlight on our fantastic team of workers at the Angus Young People’s service: Dawn, Johnny, Lynne, Eilidh, Robbie, Rowan, Claire and Anna, who provide support to children, young people and their families across Angus to deliver positive futures for all.

Our dedicated team offers personalised support to help young people thrive. This includes one-to-one support, group education and workshops and community events and outreach.

We have four main service areas that work out of the Forfar office:

  • Early Intervention and Family Support
  • Drug and Alcohol Support
  • Peer Mental Health Support
  • Relationship, Sexual Health and Parenthood

Throughout this week we will be sharing more about each of the four service areas, as well as the impact they have on young people and their loved ones. Today we focus on our Early Intervention and Family Support service.

Early Intervention and Family Support

This service offers one-to-one support to children, young people and their families. The team works with young people who are aged between 5-18 years that are affected by parental substance use or parental mental health, or young people who have experienced household domestic violence or who may be involved in offending, anti-social behaviour or risk-taking behaviours. This service is delivered in a tiered approach with Aberlour and Enhance.

The team works on building a positive relationship with the young person and offer support through building resilience and understanding risks and consequences. They help young people re-engage with education and support to attend any multi-disciplinary meetings to break down any barriers that are impacting attendance, training and employment, or find voluntary experience for them to build skills in things they like doing.

They tailor each session to the needs of the individual. Young people who are experiencing or have experienced trauma can struggle to engage with support, so the team identifies barriers and adapts their approach to suit each person. Most of the sessions are community based and involve taking part in activities to ensure young people gain key skills and qualities that enable them to become more independent, along with building confidence and self-esteem.
