Hi, my name is Rometta Donaldson and I am a Support Worker at Hillcrest Futures’ Kinloss Park service. I started in October 2016 as a relief Support Worker, and I am now full-time.
This service provides support for people who have learning disabilities, both young and old. Person-centred planning is key, involving the individual and family/carers to achieve the best outcome for the individuals we support. This could include day-to-day living essentials, accessing social activities and building their independence at a rate suitable for them. It’s very important that the individual I am supporting feels included and safe at every step of the planning.
The specialism I work in is additional support needs (ASN). I worked previously with Fife Council in high school to support young people with ASN and it felt like a natural progression to work with adults in our supported living accommodation. This gives me a lot of job satisfaction as it can be very varied from day-to-day.
I feel Hillcrest Futures’ company culture is relaxed, with a lot of support available if required. I have grown in confidence and I have the tools to be able to advocate for individuals and myself. Work-life balance at Hillcrest works well. We have our rotas a month in advance so it’s easy to plan/organise our home lives. We also have a very supportive service manager.
For anyone considering a career in the Care sector, I believe the skills and qualities you require to support and care for people are to be respectful, trustworthy, compassionate and fun.
Working for Hillcrest has lead to many memorable moments, including supporting a lady on her first flight, supporting many a holiday and seeing the enjoyment experienced by the people in my care.
Our Faces of Futures campaign showcases the depth and breadth of our Hillcrest Futures services and specialisms, and promotes us as an employer of choice to attract new talent into the business. For more information, click here.
