#NoWrongPath Campaign – Angela Murphy

Posted: August 11, 2023

In today’s #NoWrongPath campaign blog, we hear from Hillcrest’s Head of Finance, Angela Murphy, who shares some really useful advice for young people looking to find employment and jumpstart their careers.

A bit about me: Who are you, what’s your current job role, what are your interests?

Hi, I’m Angela Murphy and I’m the Head of Finance at Hillcrest. I enjoy watching football, walking and going to the gym.

From school to my first job: What was your first job after finishing school? Can you describe your career journey from this first job role to where you are now?

I left School and went to Abertay University where I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Accountancy.

Angela Murphy, Head of Finance

My first job role was as a Trainee Accountant with Findlay & Co in the year 2000.

My experience at Hillcrest: When did you start at Hillcrest and what do you enjoy most about working for this organisation?

I joined Hillcrest in November 2019 as Finance Manager, over the last three years I have worked closely with Business Transformation leading the Finance Change Program and was delighted to be appointed Head of Finance in December 2022.  I have received support and encouragement from many colleagues since joining Hillcrest in 2019, and I’m delighted to be working with so many people who share the same passion, which is to help people live better lives.

What advice do you have for young people finishing school and who are looking for employment?

Always be yourself, never be afraid to ask questions, seek help and assistance. Be open to learn something new every day. Embrace change. Always ensure you build in some time in the week to reflect on what you achieved that week.  First impressions do exist, as do being kind and respectful to each other in the workplace.  Be curious, it keeps things exciting and fresh, value your contribution to the company objectives and understand how your role fits within the organisation’s goals.
