“Hello, I’m John and I have been the Managing Director of Hillcrest Futures since January 2024. I am responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction, ensuring that the mission to “Help people live better lives” through provision of exceptional care and support is achieved.
My role is primarily to ensure that everyone in Futures is equipped with the resources, skills and tools to enable them to provide the highest standards of care and support to the most vulnerable people in our communities to achieve their personal outcomes and fulfil their potential.
It is also my responsibility to ensure that the people we support are at the heart of everything we do and every decision we take across Futures and our aspiration to improve peoples lives in the communities within which we operate.
Like most people in social care, I kind of fell into the sector. I had worked in both the private and public sector previously before joining the voluntary and charitable social care sector. I enjoyed working in this sector and the opportunity to improve communities and the lives of others that I have remained in the sector for almost 18 years and have never looked back.
Part of the reason I joined Hillcrest was my impression of the values and vision which I felt were very much aligned to my own. Values around Inclusion, Respect, Innovation and Excellence are all things I aspire towards and in my short time I have found that culture is very well embedded. Everyone from across the group has been extremely helpful and supportive since I joined. Hillcrest is full of dedicated passionate people who care deeply about helping people live better lives.
If you are thinking about a career with Hillcrest Futures, I would say anyone who has the right attributes and values will be successful. There is no need for formal qualifications as these can be provided, but someone with compassion, empathy and a strong value base would be an asset to the company. A career in care can be extremely fulfilling and there are many opportunities for progression. The majority of managers have come up through the ranks thanks to the excellent training and development offered.
Hillcrest Futures recognises the importance of everyone having a positive work-life balance. I personally have found the flexibility within my role to be of exceptional benefit and enables me to perform at my very best.
There have been quite a few memorable moments in the short period I have been at Futures. One that sticks out was my visit to the Residential service at Silverway in Montrose where I got to meet all the residents and have a lovely cup of tea and a chat. This is what I get most out of working in social care is meeting the people we support, listening to their stories and doing everything I can to help them live better lives.”
