Substance use

People experience drug and alcohol dependencies for many reasons…

Coping mechanism for trauma, loss, poor mental health and other difficulties in life can all contribute to substance dependencies.

We provide community-based drug and alcohol, recovery and harm reduction support in Angus, Dundee, Perth and Kinross, and through our homeless services in Edinburgh and Glasgow. 

Anyone can access theses services, including family members.

Areas of support

We provide a range of support in a variety of areas such as:

  • Harm reduction and overdose information
  • Naloxone training and supply
  • Safer injecting practices
  • Issue of clean injecting equipment
  • Alternatives to injecting
  • Disposal of returned equipment
  • Access to nurses
  • Wound care
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Sexual health information and STI testing
  • Free condoms and sanitary products
  • Hep C, Hep B and HIV testing
  • Food bank referrals
  • Signposting and referrals to other services
  • Steroid clinic – health screen blood tests, liver scans and advice on safe use of steroids.

The Harm Reduction service and BBV (blood-borne viruses) clinic is an open access, confidential service that provides support to individuals who use drugs.

This service operates in partnership with NHS Tayside and offers on-site access to specialist harm reduction staff, sexual health nurses and Hepatitis C specialist nurses on a drop-in basis at our centre in 4 South Ward Road, Dundee. To access to our harm reduction service please use the door at the back of the building.

The service can be accessed on a drop-in basis during the following hours:

Monday – Friday: 9am-5pm (please note: the service closes over lunch from 12pm-12.30pm)

Sunday: 12pm-2.30pm

Nurses are available 9am-3:30pm on weekdays.

Hillcrest staff are available on public holidays.

Nurses/wound care/sexual health testing are available 9am-3.30pm on Tuesdays

The service will be closed during public holidays.

Our Harm Reduction staff are community-based and attend local recovery cafes. They also provide injecting equipment, naloxone and dry blood spot testing, as well as signposting to the nurses clinics around Angus.

We offer a postal IEP service ‘Pins by Post’ to Tayside residents.

This service is only available for people who live in Tayside and are over 18.  Unfortunately, we can only provide packs to the following postcodes:

  • DD1 – DD11
  • PH1 – PH18
  • KY4 – KY6
  • KY13

In 2018 we launched our ODnotMe campaign to raise awareness about the tragic number of drug related deaths in Scotland, in particular Dundee. 90% of drug overdoses are preventable with the use of Naloxone and knowing the signs and symptoms to look out for.
