Dundee’s new Derby Street development comes alive with fun-filled gala day

Posted: July 4, 2025

The Derby Street area of Dundee came alive this week as it hosted a fun-filled event this week, organised by Dundee City Council with the assistance of Hillcrest Engagement Team and other local partners.

The event was designed to introduce the new tenants of the recently completed Derby Street development to the wider Coldside community.

The day was supported by various local partners including Hilltown Community Centre Management Group, St Martin’s Episcopal Church, Maxwell Centre, Tayside Contracts, Coldside Regeneration Forum, Dundee Bairns and Dundee Federation of Tenants Association.

With a fantastic range of attractions for all ages, highlights included a fairground teacups ride, mini trampolines, a mini zoo, a graffiti wall hosted by acclaimed artist Paco Graff, free ice cream, and Hillcrest Engagement Team’s popular Gold Cup Lucky Dip!

There were also plenty of information stalls offering advice and support for tenants. These included Hillcrest’s Energy Advice Team, who provided tips to help lower energy bills, and the Financial Wellbeing Team, who offered guidance on benefits and available funding.

Other stalls featured organisations from across Dundee, such as youth support service Strive – a partnership between Dundee’s The Corner and Hillcrest Futures – which offered a chance to try on beer and cannabis goggles to test coordination.

The event was made possible by a dedicated group of volunteers from Hillcrest’s Housing, Energy Advice, and Financial Wellbeing teams, who helped with setup, transport, and running the day.

Jennifer Kincaid, Communities Officer at Dundee City Council Communities Empowerment Team, who led on organising and running the event, said: “We’re delighted that the community event was so well attended, and was such a huge success.

“Working alongside our local partners to put it together, this event was instrumental in getting the new tenants in the area out and about, meeting others and having the opportunity to find out what local support is available to them.”

Gillian White, Hillcrest Engagement Team manager, added: “It was great having the opportunity for our Hillcrest teams and tenants to meet each other, and with the other attractions on offer, it was a very fun and lively day for all.

“With 600 ice creams handed out, it’s safe to say the event was a huge success! A big thank you goes out to all the volunteers and, of course, to the residents who came along to enjoy the day!”
