Challenge Poverty Week: food

Posted: October 6, 2023

To round off Challenge Poverty Week, we’ll be looking at the topic of Food.

Food insecurity is defined as “worrying about running out of food due to lack of money or resources”. Around 1.2 million people in Scotland have suffered from food insecurity in the last year.

Most people have heard about food banks, but may not know about community larders. A community larder is a hub that provides access to surplus food, promotes social interaction, and offers advice, such as helping people save money on their household bills. It’s not a food bank, but more a store that offers surplus food at discounted rates.

The larders are run by volunteers, who are committed to getting affordable food into communities. To find out about community larders in your area, contact your local Council who can point you in the right direction.
