Angus Tenant

This case revolves around a pensioner who was referred to our team after her Housing Benefit abruptly ceased. During the initial visit, we found the tenant sitting in a cold home, unable to afford heating. Upon investigation, it was discovered that her granddaughter had moved in, resulting in a deduction from her Housing Benefit, leaving her responsible for the full rent. Additionally, the tenant was burdened by a benefit overpayment on her Pension Credit, further reducing her income.

We contacted Pension Credit to rectify the overpayment, successfully having it written off as an administrative error. Additionally, we applied for a Discretionary Housing Payment and Attendance Allowance on behalf of the tenant. The Discretionary Housing Payment was granted at a rate of £50 per week, alleviating the financial strain on the tenant. Furthermore, the successful application for Attendance Allowance resulted in an additional £101.75 per week, rendering the tenant eligible for full Housing Benefit coverage. As a result, she no longer had to worry about paying rent.

On our follow up visit, the tenant was overwhelmed with gratitude, expressing heartfelt appreciation for the assistance she had received. She tearfully recounted how she could now afford basic necessities, such as food, heating, and winter clothing. Remarkably, she shared that she had her first haircut in five years, a simple pleasure she had been deprived of due to financial constraints. The financial gains for the tenant amounted to £11,832.04, reflecting a significant improvement in her quality of life and overall well-being.
