Edinburgh Case Study

Our tenant is a Polish national who has resided in the United Kingdom for over five years. Initially, he was homeless and placed in temporary accommodation. However, due to the language barrier, all communication was conducted via phone interpreters or email, as the tenant was proficient in translating written English to Polish.

As a part of the pre-tenancy referral process, our team engaged with the individual to assess his needs and provide necessary support. Recognising his financial challenges and health needs, we secured essential items and flooring through a Community Care grant, in addition to offering a starter pack voucher.

Upon reviewing his income sources, which primarily comprised Universal Credit with a Limited Capability for Work Related Activity element and Adult Disability Payment at a low rate mobility only, we identified a potential discrepancy in his entitlements. Through discussion it became clear that he would be entitled to the care component as well as the mobility component.

The original award for Adult Disability Payment, dating back to January 2023, was reassessed due to our advocacy efforts. Despite being just within the maximum 13-month time limit for redetermination, we successfully challenged the decision. Consequently, the tenant’s entitlement was rightfully adjusted, leading to the addition of Standard Rate Daily Living to the existing Standard Rate Mobility. This revision resulted in a significant financial gain for the tenant, amounting to 50 weeks’ worth of back pay totalling £3,405.00.
