The results are in: introducing the winners of the Hillcrest Homes Neighbourhood Hero Awards 2021

Posted: December 15, 2021

The Neighbourhood Hero Awards seek to celebrate those who have really made adifference to the community or someone’s life. There are two award categories – Neighbourhood Hero 2021, and Young Neighbourhood Hero 2021 for our heroes under the age of 16.

This year we received very worthy nominations, and it was fantastic to see the selfless support and effort many people put into their local community. Tenants from our Interested Tenants Register (ITR) were given the nominations and asked to vote for the winners.

We’re now delighted to be able to reveal the triumphant tenants!

Neighbourhood Hero 2021

Winner: Jake, Dundee

Jake’s unwavering sense of inclusion, kindness and non-stop work in bringing his community together caught the attention of our ITR. Jake has been making sure his neighbours, many of whom have recently been homeless, never go without and he even organised a community BBQ using his own funds.

Runner-up: May, Glenrothes

She may be 81, but that hasn’t stopped May playing a key role in her community. For years she has been running a friendship club, which rallies to support anyone in the community in need and no one is left out. This includes doing shopping for others, dropping off medication and even arranging lifts for neighbours to get to hospital.

Young Neighbourhood Hero 2021

Winner: Ethan, Edinburgh

Although only 11, Ethan’s fundraising efforts inspired our ITR. He started by using his personal savings of £80 to make Christmas care packages for veterans. Following a tour given by residents at Scottish Veteran’sResidences while dropping off the care packages, Ethan was told they wanted to build an allotment and kitchen garden. He immediately set up a Just Giving page to help this project and raised over £1,150 through his own efforts.

Runner-up: Gabriella, Crieff

Although she is only 6, Gabriella knew lockdown was a hard time for everyone and wanted to help raise the spirits of her neighbours and others. She regularly took to the kitchen to make fudge for neighbours and oat biscuits for the dogs in the area. She also made thank you rainbow posters for the refuse and postal workers and delivery drivers.

We’d like to say a huge congratulations to all of our winners and runners-up, and of course well done to everyone who was nominated. The Neighbourhood Hero Awards will return in 2022, so keep your eyes open for tenants who are making a difference in the community!
