#NoWrongPath Campaign – Aiden Steele
As part of our continued #NoWrongPath Campaign, and to mark Exam Results day in Scotland, we are delighted to share the career path of Aidan Steele, Painter and Decorator in Hillcrest Maintenance.
A bit about me: – Who are you, what’s your current job role, what are your interests?
Hi there my name is Aidan Steele, I’m 23 years old and I am a qualified painter and decorator currently working on the Angus and Aberdeen day to day contract within Hillcrest Maintenance.
In my time away from work I love sports including football, golf and ice hockey. I also love travelling
and socialising with friends and family.
From school to my first job: What was your first job after finishing school? Can you describe your career journey from this first job role to where you are now?
I left school at 16 years old to join a family run painting and decorating company in Dundee, however, that only lasted 9 months as it wasn’t an apprenticeship and the company weren’t willing to put me through college, meaning I would not gain my painting and decorating certification and therefore it just wasn’t right for me.
My experience at Hillcrest: When did you start at Hillcrest and what do you enjoy most about working for this organisation?
In the summer of 2017 I took the opportunity to apply for the apprentice painter and decorator position at Hillcrest and I was grateful to be given the role and I have been here ever since, working on a range of different contracts throughout the company, learning an abundance of different skills both professionally and socially.
I’ve now been at Hillcrest for just short of 6 years and the thing that I enjoy most is the constant growth opportunities within the company, allowing me to improve my skill set with an array of courses and extra training.
What advice do you have for young people finishing school and who are looking for employment?
My advice for any young person leaving school and looking to find a job would be don’t panic or stress if you don’t know what you want to do or don’t have everything figured out. You’re not supposed to at your age, you are a lot younger than you realise and trying a lot of different things before finding something you actually want to do is a good way to gain experience and build your personal skills.
